Are you okay?

Standard

It’s a simple idea, but these few humble words are asked far too infrequently.

RUOK day encourages people to reach out to family/friends/anyone, to ask if they are coping, or need support.

There is undoubtedly a stigma about discussing mental illness. It doesn’t help that they are often ‘invisible’, at least to those who aren’t looking or perhaps have no experience in the matter. Being seen as anything other than strong and capable can be embarrassing for some people, even a point of shame. It can take a lot of strength to say “actually, no I’m not okay”, but it is important to start the conversation nonetheless.

Take this opportunity to talk to your family. Your friends. The neighbour two doors down. The bus driver. The bloke who makes your morning coffee. Anyone who might be lonely.

3 million Australians suffer from depression and anxiety alone. “A conversation could change a life.”
